This guitar tuner model is based on the excellent design by noamtsvi. I encountered issues with printed PLA shafts bending and binding due to friction against the headstock wood. After discussions with ChatGPT-5.1, I modified the design to include a 2-inch steel D shaft of 0.2-inch diameter. I also cut a 9/32-inch brass pipe for a sleeve bearing through the headstock using a Dremel. The worm gear, spur gear, and casing remain 3D printed from PLA. The resulting mechanism is stronger and operates smoother, keeping costs down for my experimental stringed instruments. Check out the instrument built with these tuners: Watch the video.
