Crescent gear (gear sector) of the Mercedes-Benz windshield wiper arm
Problem: Mercedes-Benz's famous "jumping" wiper (mono-lever system) is renowned for its efficiency, but over time the plastic gear inside the mechanism wears out. When the teeth become licked, the wiper starts to work jerkily, gets stuck, or stops moving altogether. The original mechanism is supplied only assembled, which makes repairs extremely expensive.
Solution: This 3D model is a reinforced gear sector (crescent) designed to restore the functionality of the windshield wiper mechanism. The geometry of the model fully corresponds to the original, ensuring a smooth extension of the wiper rod.
Model specifications:
Compatibility: * W140 (S-class "Boar")
W210 (E-class "Bespectacled Man")
W202 (C-class)
W124 (late models with similar mechanism)
Geometry: Precise tooth profile to work in tandem with the counter gear without backlash.
Reinforcement: The model is optimized for printing with maximum infill, which makes it stronger than molded factory plastic, which has become brittle over time.
Recommendations for 3D printing (Critical!):
The mechanism operates under constant load and friction, so the choice of material is the key to long service:
Material: Nylon ONLY or PA6/PA12. The use of PETG, ABS or (especially) PLA is unacceptable - the part will fail after several cycles of operation. Nylon has the necessary viscosity and low coefficient of friction.
Filling: 100% (Solid).
Layers: 0.1 – 0.12 mm for the most precise tooth engagement.
Orientation: Printed flat for maximum tooth shear strength.
Installation instructions:
Completely clean the mechanism of old, coked grease.
Check the condition of the counter gear and guides.
Be sure to use high-quality synthetic lubricant (for example, containing Teflon or lithium), which does not corrode plastic and does not thicken in the cold.
Before reassembling, make sure that the wiper arm moves smoothly and without binding.
Benefits:
Restoring a unique Mercedes option without replacing the entire unit.
Possibility to manufacture a part from wear-resistant polymer.
Significant savings compared to purchasing a used mechanism in questionable condition.
