Odometer gear (16 teeth) for Audi 80, 90, 100 and other VAG models
Problem: A typical problem with VDO instrument panels on Audi and VW cars from the 80s and 90s is the odometer stopping. The factory gear is made of a soft polymer, which “dries out” over time and loses teeth. It is impossible to find the original part separately, and buying a used dashboard does not solve the problem, since the gear there is in the same dilapidated condition.
Solution: This 3D model is a high-precision replacement for a worn part. It is designed to take into account the microscopic dimensions of the teeth to ensure smooth engagement and restore trip odometer function.
Part Specifications:
Number of teeth: 16.
Compatibility: * Audi: 80 (B3, B4), 90, 100, Coupe, Quattro.
Porsche: 911, 928, 944 (some modifications of VDO panels).
Volvo: 850 (early releases).
Mercedes-Benz: W124, W126, R129 (with VDO mechanical odometer).
Geometry: Precise involute tooth profile to eliminate wedging.
3D Printing Recommendations:
Given the extremely small size of the part (diameter is usually about 6–7 mm), special requirements are placed on print quality:
Material: Nylon or high-quality photopolymer (SLA/DLP) with “Tough” characteristics is recommended. The use of ABS/PETG is only possible with ideal airflow settings, otherwise the teeth will “float”. PLA cannot be used - it is too fragile for such small elements.
Высота слоя: 0.05 – 0.1 мм (на FDM) или 0.02 – 0.05 мм (на SLA).
Filling: 100% (Solid).
Speed: Minimum possible to ensure precision of small elements.
Installation instructions:
Carefully disassemble the instrument panel (be careful with the fragile plastic housing and arrows).
Completely remove any remaining old gear and its debris from the meter mechanism.
Before installing a new part, make sure there are no burrs on the axle.
Lubricate the gear with a thin layer of silicone grease suitable for plastic.
Important: Check the ease of rotation of the mechanism by hand before final assembly of the panel.
