Magnet Butterfly is an innovative mechanism utilizing diametrically magnetized magnets to create a rolling contact joint. This design offers low friction even under significant loads and compensates for panel thickness during folding.
The model showcases a complex mathematical approach to the movement of the panels, making it more challenging than standard pin/hinge joints. Rolling contact joints are also being researched for lumbar disc replacements, joint replacements, and compliant bearings.
Magnet Specifications:
- Cylindrical Magnets: Diametrically magnetized, 1/2 inch long, 1/4 inch in diameter, 4 needed.
- Rectangular Magnets: 1/8 inch thick, 1/4 inch wide, 1/2 inch long, 8 needed.
Tip: If magnets become loose, wrap them with thin tape for a snug fit.
