This part is a small storage compartment that can be used in place of a broken ashtray on the center console of a BMW E39. The lower ashtray holder clip on E39 models usually breaks and cannot be repaired without replacing the entire center console trim, which is hard to find in good condition.
The part has a cutout for a lighting strip, which illuminates the cockpit at night. The fastening is very tight, avoiding the need for glue. Press gently with a little force, and it will fit as shown in the photos.
