During the early stages of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union were preparing for a possible nuclear war. Operation Question Mark was initiated to create tanks capable of continuing to fight in nuclear conditions. Chrysler developed the TV-8 tank, which featured two shells for armor: an outer one for flotation and an inner one for protection. It was designed to be fully sealed with a powerplant (possibly nuclear) and NBC shielding. The tank could survive nuclear shockwaves due to its shape, which also enhanced its amphibious capabilities.
The crew consisted of four members and operated a 90mm gun, with an automated .50 cal mounted on top. However, the tank had significant weaknesses: the turret lacked gun elevation, and its turret ring was a weak point. The cramped interior made maintenance difficult, and nuclear reactor shielding would have added weight, affecting turret functionality. If the project had gone into production, the tanks would have been issued to the 329th and 706th Special Tank Battalions for rapid response in nuclear conflict scenarios.
