Have you ever wondered how an automatic transmission works? This model features six forward speeds and one reverse. Real automatic transmissions use hydraulic or electrical systems to engage different clutches and brakes for gear shifting, depending on the driving situation. In this model, you control the simplified brakes and clutches yourself.
Gear ratios:
The OpenSCAD file is included and is highly parametric if you want to experiment with different gear ratios. Printing instructions: all STL files are available for individual piece printing, but using the plates is quicker. Print one each of stand.stl, gears.stl, carrier.stl, shaft.stl, crank.stl, handle.stl, and three of planets.stl and pins.stl.
All assembly steps are shown in the photos above. Start with the planet carrier right-side-up, insert two medium-length pins into two inner holes, and snap the idlers (smallest planet) onto them.
